VATICAN HALTS STUDY OF CHURCH TIES TO GERMANY DURING NAZI ERA
"Stem Cell research is evil; Nazis, we're not so sure" Vatican, Italy - (GIN) - Officials in the Vatican abruptly halted research by Jewish and Catholic scholars studying the ties between the Catholic Church and pre-war Nazi Germany. The scholars condemned the action. "What is this, China?" asked one scholar. The study focused on the actions and writings of Pope Pius XII, who was the Vatican's ambassador to Germany in the 1920s and early 1930s and who later became Pope. He died in 1958. "There's an effort to beatify him," said one Vatican official, who wished to remain anonymous. "We can beatify him if his support of anti-Jewish and anti-Gypsy actions by the Nazis is highlighted." Another Vatican official who also wished to remain anonymous said Pope Pius XII was clearly tainted but that didn't make him evil. "Stem Cell research is evil. Nazis, we're not so sure," he said. "You know, no one is a saint," he added. A third Vatican official who wished to remain anonymous said he wanted to be an anonymous source on the Condit-Levy scandal, but he didn't know anything about it. |
