O'CONNOR HAS SECOND THOUGHTS ABOUT DEATH PENALTY
Wrongly Executed Are Probably Grateful For Her Doubts Washington, D.C. - (GNS) - Justice Sandra "Dee" Day O'Connor announced to a meeting of people in Minnesota of all places that she was having second thoughts about her staunch, unbending, unwavering, resolutely blind embrace and endorsement of the death penalty. "It seems like, statistically, some innocent people have been, uh, well, have gone to a better place, uh, prematurely," she said. O'Connor, who was one of a majority of Supreme Court Justices who voted less than ten years ago to not allow new evidence to be used in efforts to overturn death sentences or seek new trials, said her doubts have caused her to lose some sleep during naps during longwinded arguments by those who believe new evidence of innocence does justify new trials. "You know, I was going to quit anyway, then it looked like Gore would win so I had to stay on, but now that Bush has won, well, you know, maybe I can quit now, then I won't have to deal with this," O'Connor told the group. The innocent people already executed could not be reached for comment. |
