FBI, CIA MEET IN OSLO, SEEK DEAL Oslo - (GIN) - In an effort to settle differences and work out an accord that would produce a productive working relationship, FBI and CIA officials met at Oslo in a series of meetings described by insiders as "intense." Despite smiling faces and handshakes at noontime press conferences, many believe the problems are insurmountable. "The FBI seeks jurisdiction over itself," said Juan Cointelpro, professor of law enforcement studies at Dubuque University. "And the CIA seeks jurisdiction over itself. They both insist on the right to not communicate." Cointelpro said problems have plagued both agencies since their inception. "When you study the FBI, you learn the only thing they were ever somewhat good at was infiltrating open, democratic left-wing organizations in the 1960s. When you study the CIA, you learn the only thing they were ever somewhat good at was watching James Bond films and Get Smart to get ideas for gadgets," he said. The CIA did participate in destabilization tactics in foreign countries, he said. "They ousted Arbenz and Mossadegah, but their record of successful assassination is virtually non-existent." "Bush may have to force them to cooperate, but the decades of hostility will be hard to overcome," Cointelpro said. |
