EUDORA WELTY DIES
Famous Writer Wrote For 'Brady Bunch', 'Family Ties', 'Jeopardy'
Clarksdale, MS - (GNS) - Eudora Welty, writer of the famous episode on the Brady Bunch where part of the family incorrectly suspects others in the family are up to something other than what they're really up to, with hilarious and heartwarming consequences, died over the weekend.
Welty, a non-racist white person from Mississippi, moved to Hollywood in 1959 to write for The Gale Storm Show. She wrote many episodes of The Real McCoys, The Joey Bishop Show, Camp Runamuck and My Three Sons before achieving a cult status as one of the senior staff writers for The Brady Bunch.
"Her stories were always about people. People in funny situations," said fellow sitcom writer John Updike.
"She had an ear for humanity, but she never preached," Updike said.
After The Brady Bunch, Welty wrote several poignant episodes of Family Ties.
"She wrote the one where they're all arguing with one another and then at the end they love each other," Family Ties co-producer Thomas Merton said. "It was so moving, but funny."
When Family Ties went off the air, Welty wrote for Jeopardy.
"She wrote the one where the answer was 'cantankerous'," said original Jeopardy host Art Fleming. "It was a classic."
