CARDINALS ARRIVE AT VATICAN
McGwire, Musial Sign Autographs; Flood Challenges System
Patrick St. Vincent Malloy
Vatican Correspondent

The Vatican, Italy - (GIN)
- Mark McGwire, Stan Musial, Curt Flood and over thirty other Cardinals from the United States arrived at the Vatican yesterday amid a flurry of pronouncements and autograph seekers.
"I sure wish ol' Dizzy could'a seen this," declared Cardinal Hall of Famer Stan Musial, referring to the late, great Cardinal Dizzy Dean.
Musial and McGwire were surrounded by autograph hounds, many of them young boys, and signed autographs for two hours before heading into the Vatican locker rooms to change into their costumes.
Curt Flood declined to sign autographs and instead held an impromptu press conference, challenging the centuries old system of allegiance to the Pope.
"It's the Twenty-First century," he said. "We should not be enslaved by a narrow-minded, ancient doctrine. Celibacy is just another form of control by the Massa," Flood said.
As for the current scandal and future plans, Flood said the church should not be contracted even if there is poor attendance. Instead, "the players who take abusive advantage of the fans or who ignore them altogether should be thrown out."
Flood suggested Bob Gibson should be put in charge.
"Nobody messes with him," Flood said.
